The Hostess of the Inn

Carlo Goldoni, (translated & adapted by Katherine Gregor)

Synopsis:

"My foremost pleasure is to be waited on, admired and adored.
This is my weakness and that of almost all women."

Beautiful and shrewd Mirandolina runs a popular Florence inn, and juggles three suitors - an impoverished marquess, a nouveau-riche count, and the faithful servant her dying father selected to be her husband. So when the Knight of Ripafratta - a sworn misogynist - comes to stay at her inn, she takes up the challenge to teach him a lesson. However, what starts as a practical joke spirals out of her control, leaving Mirandolina with only one option to save herself and her honour...

First performed in 1752, in Venice, The Hostess of the Inn (La Locandiera) was one of the first stage portrayals of the modern woman who brings together traditional male and female characteristics in order to remain in charge of her own fate. Its heroine, Mirandolina, is possibly the first female comedy character who entertains not because of the any ridiculous traits, but through her wit and her cunning.

Especially commissioned by Giant Olive to celebrate the company's official launch. This new version of the play, translated by Katherine Gregor, aims to capture the simplicity and directness of the original Italian.
