'Augustine Early is going to be famous, more famous than anybody I ever knew.'
Nominated by the OFFIES for Best Director and Best Male!
The Atheist is a satirical play about catching the perfect front-page headline, whatever the cost. The play follows the story of a cynical US news reporter, clawing his way up the journalistic hierarchy from trailer trash roots to notoriety and celebrity.
"Augustine Early is a crooked journalist who has made an art of clawing his way up the professional ladder. When he turns a politicians tawdry predilections into front page news, the scandal threatens to undo the one person he thought was immune." He is both revolting and charismatic, a cartoon take on the tabloid journalist.
Veteran Actor / Director Hugh Ross directs Jonathan Chambers in this searing and hilarious play about catching the perfect headline, whatever the cost.
"With its sardonic wit, startling twists and surprising lightning bolts of tenderness delivered with an almost effortless mix of clarity and subtlety...this is not just a show, this is a conjuring trick. A rare treat, 'The Atheist' made me a believer in theatrical magic."
Rikki Beadle-Blair (May 2012)
"The calibre of Jonathan Chambers’ performance is technically and emotionally perfect- I could not fault it. I was totally engrossed for every minute of the show ‘ Abigail McKern (May 2012)
' A tour de force from Jonathan Chambers. Witty and wicked, a look at the dark side of journalism. Nothing changes! ’
Kim Thomson (May 2012)
